General Directions for Machine Embroidery
Applique`
Applique` is quick and fun and adds dimension to your embroidery project.
If your project will be washed then you need to wash all fabric before
stitching to avoid different fabric shrinkage pulling the applique`
away from material. Iron and starch all fabric before using.
All applique` designs have three steps:
1. The first stitching is the
outline of the applique`. This shows you the size of the material
to cut and where to place it. I like to do steps 1 and 2 stitching
in the same color of the final outline so it won't show thru the final
stitching.
2. The second stitching is
to adhere the applique` to the fabric.
3. The third step is to stitch
out the rest of the design.

STEP 1
Hoop your backing and fabric together. Stitch out first color which
will show placement and size of
applique`. |
 |
I have placed my applique` material over the
previous stitching. You can use spray adhesive on the corners of your
applique` fabric to help hold it in place. If you have spray starched
and ironed your fabric it will lay down nice and flat onto the material. |
 |
STEP 2
Stitch down the applique` fabric onto your material. |
 |
Without unhooping or pulling on the material, carefully
cut closely to the stitching and remove
excess applique` material from outside the
stitched area. Laying your hoop on a flat surface
helps to prevent accidental jabs into the material
and aids in a smooth, clean cut. |

Step 3
Complete stitching of design. |
